DBS Check for Driving Instructors: How to Apply
30th September 2026

Do You Need a DBS Check to Become a Driving Instructor?
Yes. You must get a new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to start applying to become an ADI, even if you’ve had a DBS check before. The DVSA uses an enhanced check as part of its assessment of whether applicants are suitable for the ADI register.
- Where to apply: start on the official GOV.UK service for first-time applicants.
- Application fee: GOV.UK currently lists £5.40. Identity verification at a Post Office costs £12 if you cannot complete it online.
- What happens next: your certificate is sent to you by post. You then follow the DVSA application process.
Fees and application details checked against GOV.UK on 29 September 2026. Check the official service for current information before applying.
Why Do Driving Instructors Need a DBS Check?

Driving instructors work in a position of trust. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) assesses whether applicants are suitable to join the Approved Driving Instructor register. The enhanced DBS check is one source of information for that assessment.
A criminal record does not automatically determine the outcome of every application. The ADI Registrar considers individual circumstances. If you’re concerned about your eligibility or driving record, read the ADI register guide and check with the DVSA before committing to training costs.
How to Apply for Your Driving Instructor DBS Check
1. Check Your Eligibility
Before you apply, review the DVSA eligibility requirements on GOV.UK. These cover your age, driving licence and suitability to become an instructor.
2. Start on the Official GOV.UK Page
Use the GOV.UK criminal record check service for first-time ADI applicants. Its current Start now link takes you to Complete Background Screening (CBS), the provider named by GOV.UK. Follow the live instructions rather than an old organisation code or access code from a video or blog post.
3. Prepare Your Identity Documents
You’ll need to prove your identity. GOV.UK gives examples such as a passport, driving licence, utility bill or bank statement less than three months old. The application service will tell you which documents it needs in your case, so don’t assume everybody uses the same combination.
4. Pay and Complete the Identity Check
GOV.UK currently lists a £5.40 application fee, payable by debit or credit card. If you cannot verify your identity online, the service will explain how to do this at a Post Office. GOV.UK says Post Office identity verification costs £12. Check the current fees as you apply.
5. Continue Your DVSA Application
Your criminal record certificate will be sent to you by post. GOV.UK says the DVSA will also contact you if the record contains criminal information. Read the ADI register guide and follow the official application steps to continue the process.
What Happens After the DBS Check?
The check is an early application step. It does not qualify you to teach on its own. The wider route includes applying to the DVSA, training and passing ADI Parts 1, 2 and 3.

Driving Instructor DBS Check FAQs
Can I Use a DBS Certificate I Already Have?
No. First-time ADI applicants must obtain a new check, even if they already hold a DBS certificate for another job.
How Much Does a Driving Instructor DBS Check Cost?
GOV.UK currently lists £5.40 to apply. If you cannot verify your identity online, GOV.UK says Post Office identity verification costs £12. Check the official service for the latest fees.
Can I Apply for the Check Myself?
Yes. Start through the official GOV.UK service, which links to the provider handling this DVSA application route.
How Long Does the Check Take?
Processing times vary, and the official first-time application page does not promise a fixed completion date. Your certificate is sent by post. If you need help with an application in progress, use the provider contact details linked from GOV.UK.
How Long Does a Driving Instructor DBS Check Last?
A DBS certificate does not have one universal expiry date. ADIs renew their registration every four years and need a new criminal record check for renewal. If you’re already an ADI, use the separate GOV.UK service for existing instructors.
Can I Become a Driving Instructor If I Have a Criminal Record?
A criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from becoming an ADI. The Registrar assesses each case individually, including the relevance and circumstances of any offence. Read the ADI register guide if this affects you.
