PASS N GO INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

ADI Training: Build the Knowledge Behind Your Instructor Journey

Becoming a driving instructor involves more than the hours you spend in the car.
Good ADI training also means developing the knowledge behind your
driving, understanding why decisions are made and eventually learning how to
communicate that knowledge effectively to somebody else.

That is why Pass N Go combines practical instructor training with its own ADI
syllabus and online learning through PECODO. The aim is to give
you structured learning that can support your development across ADI Parts 1, 2
and 3, including time spent away from your practical training sessions.

Why ADI Training Goes Beyond In-Car Lessons

When researching driving instructor training, it is natural to focus on practical
questions: how much training will I receive, what tests do I need to pass and

how long does it take to become a driving instructor?

Those questions matter, but there is another important part of your development:
what you do between your training sessions.

Your time in the car gives you the opportunity to practise, receive feedback and
develop your skills with a trainer. Structured learning outside the car gives you
time to prepare for those sessions, revisit subjects you find difficult and develop
a better understanding of why particular driving and teaching principles matter.

The idea is simple:
online learning and practical training should work together, rather than being
treated as two separate parts of your development.
THE SYLLABUS

What Is the Pass N Go ADI Syllabus?

There is plenty of driving information available online. You can watch videos,
read articles, search for individual questions and find revision resources.

The Pass N Go syllabus takes a different approach by providing structured learning
designed around the journey towards becoming an Approved Driving Instructor.

The learning content is hosted through PECODO, giving Pass N Go
trainees an online learning system that supports ADI Parts 1, 2 and 3.

PECODO is included within the Pass N Go Instructor Training package and provides
access to more than 50 online lessons. Trainees can access the platform online,
work through training resources and track their progress alongside their wider
ADI training.

How PECODO Works Alongside Your Practical ADI Training

PECODO is not intended to replace working with your instructor trainer. Instead,
it provides another part of the learning process.

You might study a subject before your practical session so that you already
understand some of the principles behind it. You can then discuss it with your
trainer, apply that knowledge in the car and receive feedback on your performance.

Afterwards, you can return to your learning materials and reinforce areas that
need further development.

01
Learn
Build your understanding
02
Apply
Put it into practice
03
Feedback
Work with your trainer
04
Develop
Strengthen your skills

This creates a continuous learning cycle where your independent study and
practical ADI training support each other.

STAGE 01

How PECODO Supports ADI Part 1

The first stage of the qualification is ADI Part 1, which assesses
your theory knowledge and hazard perception.

At this stage, developing a strong knowledge foundation is important. You need
to understand areas including road procedure, traffic signs and signals, driving
law, hazard perception and instructional knowledge.

The purpose of the syllabus is not simply to help you memorise information before
an examination. The knowledge you develop during Part 1 can continue to support
you when you move into practical driving and, later, instructional training.

STAGE 02

Taking Your Knowledge Into ADI Part 2

After passing Part 1, the qualification moves into ADI Part 2,
where the focus changes from theory knowledge to demonstrating your own driving
ability at the standard expected of somebody training to become a professional
instructor.

This is where the relationship between knowledge and practical application becomes
particularly important.

You can use your online learning to develop your understanding away from the car
and then work with your trainer to put that understanding into practice. Feedback
from your training can highlight areas that need further work, giving you something
specific to revisit before your next session.

STAGE 03

Building Towards ADI Part 3 Training

ADI Part 3 takes your development from demonstrating that you can drive to
demonstrating that you can teach.

This requires a different level of understanding. Knowing what you would do in a
particular driving situation is only the beginning. As an instructor, you also
need to consider why something matters, what your learner understands, the risks
involved and how you can help them make safer decisions independently.

For example, you might understand how you personally approach a busy junction.
As an instructor, you also need to observe how your learner approaches it,
recognise what they have or have not identified, manage the risk and use
appropriate questions or instruction to help them improve.

“I know how to do this.”

↓

“I understand why this matters.”

↓

“I understand how to help somebody else learn this.”

ADI Part 3 assesses areas including lesson planning, risk management and teaching
and learning strategies.

Who Can Start ADI Training?

Before beginning the qualification process, you will need to make sure you meet
the eligibility requirements for becoming an Approved Driving Instructor.

These include requirements around your age, driving experience, driving record
and criminal record check before progressing through the ADI qualification.

We’ve explained these in our

Driving Instructor Age and Requirements guide
, including what you need before beginning Parts 1, 2 and 3.

Why Combine Online Learning With Practical ADI Training?

Becoming a good driving instructor requires more than knowing the correct answer
to a theory question or being able to demonstrate a manoeuvre yourself.

You need to understand what is happening, recognise potential risks and eventually
communicate your knowledge in a way that helps another person develop their own
understanding and make safe decisions.

THINK BEYOND THE ANSWER

Ask yourself:

  • Why is that the answer?
  • When does it apply?
  • How would I explain it?
  • How would I apply it in the car?
  • How could I help a learner understand it for themselves?

PECODO gives you a structured place to continue developing that knowledge between
your practical training sessions.
